Basel – Host City and cultural capital out of passion

Basel – located in Switzerland on the border with Germany and France – is a popular venue for major international sporting events such as the Fencing EURO 2024. Basel is definitely worth a visit and has a lot to offer culturally.

Its central location in the heart of Europe, optimal transport links, excellent infrastructure and many years of experience make Basel the ideal host city for major international sporting events. In addition to the Fencing EURO 2024, three other European and world championships are on the programme for 2024 and 2025:

European Women's Handball Championships

(Women’s EHF EURO, 28.11. – 15.12.2024)

The venue for Fencing EURO 2024 and other major sporting events is the St. Jakobshalle, one of the most modern multifunctional halls in Europe. The hall offers space for 12,400 spectators. With its generous dimensions, modern technical equipment and unique transport connections it is an ideal venue for major events of all kinds.


Cultural capital of Switzerland

No other European city offers a cultural density comparable to that of Basel. The "cultural capital of Switzerland" is home to almost 40 museums, some of them world-famous like Kunstmuseum Basel and Fondation Beyeler, within an area of just 37 square kilometres.


One week before the European Fencing Championships, Art Basel, the world's most important trade fair for modern and contemporary art, takes place. The multi-award-winning Theater Basel, the Stadtcasino Basel with one of the best music halls in the world, internationally renowned orchestras, numerous festivals and buildings by international star architects create a unique, inspiring atmosphere in Basel.

    This Summer the entire museum and its surrounding park will be transformed into the site of an experimental presentation of contemporary art.
